As I write this it is August 6th. I’ve been in Eastern Idaho for two and half months now, and many, many lessons have been learned. For me the key reason I travel in the Summers is too get out of the unbearable heat of Las Vegas in the Summer, and because I totally love road trips! Oh I know many people like this heat, but personally I do not.
While the weather up in this region was awesome for the first six weeks, after that it got a bit warm for me. Still not Las Vegas warm, but warmer than I like. But enough of that… you have far better things to do than read about the weather.
Lessons Of My Travels
One big lesson has been while I love clouds and rain, this can be a hassle I’ve not seen much of in the Desert Southwest when it comes to Milky Way Photography. So far I’ve been clouded out at every new moon this Summer! Total bummer!
Another big lesson has been people. They are everywhere! Travels into any National Park between Memorial Day and Labor Day is trying at best. Severe over crowding!
But Where’s The Inspiration Garrett?
Correct! None of the above is inspirational… so? Inspirationally, how do I make my artwork different? I mean everywhere ya look is another tree or mountain. And wildlife? People do not really buy those images. (although it’s a personal goal to just once Photograph a Big Bull Moose) A lot of Yellowstone National Park has been Photographed to death. When this occurs many of us have difficulty looking for something different.
So what have I been doing to find something different artistically? Infrared! I showed you some color images from my last post. This time I’ll show you some monochrome. Infrared Photography lends itself exceptionally well to the fine art sector.
And something I’ve never seen in the Desert Southwest? Some super cool old brick Architecture! In Vegas they blow up our history in order to make way for the next Mega Resort. Here? They preserve history! Which is cool. I mean if it wasn’t for our history none of us would be here right? But really! Look at the brick detail in these two buildings? Wow!
In all of my research into this region I never saw anything about these two buildings. So! The lesson? Do not go out there wishing to shoot another tree or mountain. Look for the unique. Be unique in your capture. Both of these buildings were Photographed with my converted Nikon D-850 at 590nm.
I’ll be doing a class on Infrared Imagery at B&C Camera this October 5th. Be on the lookout for the announcement. I’ve been consentrating a lot on Infrared Photography this past year. I can’t wait to share with you, all that I’ve learned. I’ll also be doing an Infrared PhotoSafari around the 17th of October. I’m putting together plans for that now.
